List of Facebook’s pre-IPO investments

Earlier this month I was doing some research for a presentation I was giving at an event in Dubai and I came across a breakdown of the investments secured by Facebook from 2004 to 2011. It’s a pretty eye-popping list of numbers, and does a great job portraying the importance of regular capital injections for hyper-growth companies. Here’s the breakdown:
- June 2004: $500,000
- May 2005: $12,700,000 (Valuation: $87,500,000)
- March 2006: $27,500,000 (Valuation: $500,000,000)
- October 2007: $240,000,000 (Valuation: $15,000,000,000)
- November 2007: $60,000,000
- January 2008: $15,000,000
- March 2008: $60,000,000
- May 2008: $100,000,000 (loan)
- May 2009: 200,000,000 (Valuation : $10,000,000,000)
- November 2009: $90,000,000
- June 2010: $120,000,000
- January 2011: $1,500,000,000 (Valuation $50,000,000,000)
This comes out to over $2.4b raised from June 2004 to Jan. 2011. Facebook went on to IPO in May 2012 with a market cap of $104,000,000,000.
But here’s a bit more perspective for you: Uber has raised nearly $10,000,000,000 since it was founded in 2009 — 4 times as much as Facebook raised in the aforementioned period. Uber was last valued in the range of $62-68b.
Time to give my zero key a rest.
